Halifax Memories

Halifax Memories

by Dennis Cato

Although he was born and spent his formative years there, Dennis has not lived in Halifax since 1962. The result is that the city, particularly the South End, has become a sealed time capsule, bathed in the warm glow of nostalgia. "Halifax Memories" is an attempt to recapture those times.

103. Some Old Coins

Attached are photos of five of my collection of some thirty old coins, sitting on their brass pins against a framed blue satin background over my fireplace. They were bought in the early 1950's from The Georgian Antique Shop (see post #7). The first, and most spectacular, is a 17th. century "thaler" ... click for more

102. Miss MacDonald's Report Card

Attached are five photos as they appear on opening Miss MacDolald's Report Card from College Street School for the academic year 1948-1949. It served as the basis for my posts "Miss MacDonald's Classroom" (#32-37). It is recommended that you use it as the basis for detecting any discrepancies in my ... click for more

101. The Altar Boys

The picture is of The Altar Boys Society of Saint Mary's Basilica in 1950. It is the pictorial accompaniment for "Agnus Dei" (posts #49 & #50). At the right is the Director of the Society, Father Albert O'Driscoll and, looking suitably solemn, I am third from the left in the second row from the ... click for more

The photo of my brother Ian and me on the steps of 205 Atlantic Street was taken, judging by my appearance, about 1946 or 1947. (see post #5, "My Brother.") It was 205 and not 203 Atlantic because, I think, of the position of the sun. It graphically portrays the fact that we were, indeed, a study in ... click for more

99. The Auld Hus, March 9, 1942

So here it is, 68 Gassiot Rd, Tooting, London S.W. 17 with my grandmother standing outside the home. The photo is on a postcard and on the back she has written, "Just as I am standing a poor fellow came along snapping the houses. There is a line in a song this suggests, d'you know it? Writing later. ... click for more
